We've had a wonderful Christmas with our families. There was a crowded mass with beautiful chorale music, eggnog by the fire, buttered stollen, endless stockings, mountains of wrapping paper (or, newspaper in the Heinrichs house), silly toys, traditional steak au poivre on Christmas day, touring around looking at Christmas lights, visiting with relatives, and lots of fun and laughter. By the end of the day Charlie was starting to get the hang of the whole present opening thing. The food and sweets have been flowing steadily- we're definitely going to be hitting the gym come January!
It didn't start smoothly though. Not only did the snow in Virginia almost keep us home, but we have been in the process of refinancing our house and had scheduled the closing on Christmas eve. The good news was that we had a great time chatting with the title guy who was actually quite interesting. The bad news? Well, not only did the whole thing take over 3 hours, but we still aren't done. It was all a tad bit stressful, to say the least. Moral of the story:
1) It's not really a good idea to close in a different state from where you live.
2) Don't conduct any important business on a major holiday.
So anyway, back to Christmas. Charlie got a new walker wagon to push around the house, lots of nice toys, Montessori-type tools (like a tiny apron, bowl and pitcher), some books and cool duds. Among other things, Jim got some hip welder's goggles and I got more of my favorite type of gift - library books! (This is a brilliant idea Jim came up with a few years ago - perfect for those frugal souls in your life.)
So while this year we sat, surrounded by family and friends, in cold and snowy Michigan...I couldn't help but think back to last year. On Christmas day '08, Jim and I took Charlie home from the hospital - a very tiny little bundle. It was sunny and 60 degrees, and our house was perfectly quiet as Charlie slept by the Christmas tree and we waited for our families who would begin arriving that night.
Both so different, yet perfect.
Merry Christmas everyone!
What a stud!
Good times!
